The read that morning
This week settles a question that has hung over energy markets since July: was the selloff exhaustion or the beginning of a deeper rout? Oil jumped 4.04% on the day, the biggest single-session gain in the complex, yet it still sits 6.38% lower than five sessions ago. That gap between the daily surge and the weekly slide is the tension I’m watching.
The bounce in crude is real, but it is happening against a backdrop of capital rotating out of energy as an asset class. Energy ranks dead last in the cross-asset strength list at -0.95, while international equities lead at +0.98. Money is leaving the barrel and moving into stocks abroad. Gold, meanwhile, has rallied 1.26% on the day and 4.85% over the past five sessions, climbing toward the upper edge of its six-month range. The dollar is flat, bonds are weak—the rotation is clear.
Where is the crowd looking? In crypto, attention is shifting from bitcoin itself to the broader alt-coin ecosystem. The rotation model reads “Broad Alt Season,” and trading volume is surging on Avalanche and BSC. Bitcoin is up 2.38% over the week but lost ground on the day, while the BTC/Gold ratio is rising—bitcoin is taking the baton from gold as the risk-on leader. In equities, energy led the day but technology and health care are the steady hands; consumer discretionary lagged sharply, down 1.87%.
The market’s lines in the sand are clear. Gold is boxed in a range roughly 6% wide, and at 4,299.1 it sits almost exactly halfway up. A break above 4,377.5 would flip the picture—that is the buy-stop level waiting roughly 1.8% above current price. Silver has a similar structure, with a buy stop at 63.10 and a sell stop at 54.85. Bitcoin’s key levels are 66,914.0 to the upside and 61,162.8 to the downside, each about 4% away. These are the pivots that will tell us whether the week’s themes hold or reverse.
For now, the story is one of rotation: out of energy, into international equities and gold, with crypto catching up. The next few sessions will test whether oil’s bounce has legs or is just a dead cat in a downtrend—and whether gold can finally break the ceiling that has held since June.
